On Thursday, May 4, 2023, the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission held a hearing on "Rule by Law: China’s Increasingly Global Legal Reach" in Washington, D.C. The hearing discussed China's approach to international law and norms and how it was trying to influence or shape them. SWF Director of Program Planning Dr. Brian Weeden testified as part of the second panel, which looked at China's approach to international law and norms in the cyber, space, and maritime domains as well as on the issue of Taiwan. Dr. Weeden's testimony provided an overview of the current legal and normative framework for space activities, China's interactions with existing space governance institutions, and an assessment of where China's interests in this area overlap or conflict with those of the United States.
